october 5th, 2012. from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, welcome to "today," 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on friday morning, i am savannah guthrie. >> i am david gregory once again in for matt. the president was looking for lift after the debate, he got it with these jobs numbers that have just come out this morning. there are questions about how we got here. >> it is a confusing report. the economy added 114,000 jobs in september which is actually less than the previous month, but the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1 to 7.8%, so coming up, we're going to talk about all of this, the impact on the presidential race with chuck todd and catch up with jim cramer from cnbc. and get into a new statement from mitt romney that he was completely wrong when he called

47% victims. a change from what he said. >> took a long time to distance himself from the remarks. we will switch gears, ask you if you remember the impatient driver caught on camera using the sidewalk to get around a crowded school bus. guess what, she got busted. her mom is coming to her daughter's defense with an explanation you may find hard to believe. we're going to hear from her coming up. and remember, this guy is a prankster that posed as a delivery guy, accidentally dropping boxes of the new iphone in front of those people waiting in line for the new iphone. we will talk to the prankster later this morning. we start with breaking news. the morning's jobs report with the election just one month away, jim cramer, host of "mad money" at the stock exchange this morning. first a clarification, can you explain why we have a dip in the actual unemployment rate with such anemic job growth, 114,000 jobs created?

>> reporter: two different surveys, they call households, see how they're doing, the other uses payroll data. it has always been accepted that payroll data is more informative than the percentage figure. >> where are the signs of health in the economy if we see job creation as rather slow month to month. if you look at the overall picture, where do you see signs of strength? >> reporter: more retail, fewer firing, some in auto is pretty good. in general, i don't want to -- what matters more than anything, they revised other numbers that had been bad previous months up. so maybe this is consistent slow growth. that's what shocked people. >> politically, campaigns will jump on this, particularly the white house. where is that sign of momentum that they would argue? >> reporter: i think what they could say is the summer turned

out not as bad. we are obviously in a trajectory, back to where we were. haven't been below 8% in a long time. that's something to talk about. one of the things that surprised me, a lot of people saying the numbers are phony. we had madam secretary, labor secretary put to her are the numbers phony. this is a vitriol, partisan moment. i got people saying they are. >> jim cramer on the jobs report, thank you very much. here is savannah. >> thanks. now we will get into the politics. mitt romney and president obama will be talking about what the numbers mean in virginia today. peter alexander traveling with the romney campaign. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. both campaigns came in circling two important dates, first wednesday's debate, second, today's jobs report, the latest update on the state of the nation's economy. you can expect mitt romney will be pouncing on the strong

performance this week and jobs report numbers today. as for the debate, savannah, we learned a huge audience was watching. more than 62 million americans, most that tuned in for a first presidential debate since 1980 between jimmy carter and ronald reagan. late thursday, fireworks exploded in the sky, not on the debate stage. in virginia's heavily conservative shenandoah valley. >> last night was an important night. >> reporter: a confident, reinvigorated mitt romney alongside paul ryan tried to capitalize on the campaign's fresh momentum. >> i got the chance to ask the questions people around the country want to ask. why is he pushing obama care when 20 million people are out of work. >> reporter: romney made news on a topic he wasn't asked about on the debate, appearing on fox news he repute ated earlier comments, writing off 47% of americans.

>> you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. in this case i said something completely wrong, and i absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown that i care about 100%. >> reporter: in wisconsin where the crowd swelled to more than 30,000, president obama arrived armed with new energy and attack lines against romney that were absent from wednesday's debate. all but calling his opponent a liar. >> governor romney may dance around his position, he may do a tap dance and a two step, but if you want to be president, then you owe the american people the truth. >> reporter: mr. obama's top advisers can see the president needs to come back fighting in the next two debates, find a sharper way to sell his message. he will make adjustments, top strategists said. he also took aim at romney's pledge to cut funds to pbs, home of big bird. that's less than $100 million a year, a fraction of the overall federal budget. >> thank goodness somebody is finally cracking down on big bird.

who knew that he was responsible for all the deficits. elmo has to watch out! >> reporter: a past presidential nominee, al gore, who had his own debate struggles offered this unusual explanation for mr. obama's uninspired performance, blaming high altitude in denver. >> obama arrived in denver just a few hours before the debate started. romney did his debate prep in denver. when you go to 5,000 feet. >> exactly. >> and you only have a few hours to adjust, i don't know. >> reporter: after hearing those comments and being asked about them, mitt romney laughed al gore's answer off. after virginia, savannah, the president heads to ohio, and mitt romney to florida where he campaigns this weekend. the president ending up in california for a fund-raiser,

including a concert with john bon jovi, katy perry, and stevie wonder. >> thanks. chuck todd, nbc's political director and correspondent. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> a jobs report on one hand, the jobs added a lackluster figure, but unemployment dipped. in terms of the headline, does it benefit president obama? >> it benefits him in the tone of coverage today, right, in the way the media looks at him, in the way he's got something positive to talk about, and it is a psychological barrier. right after the democratic convention, all of that momentum a month ago the democrats had, friday after the democratic convention, a bad jobs report came out, and that did nothing to stop the president's momentum. i don't know if this does anything to stop, for instance, mitt romney's momentum. this is something we've seen in polling, that the economy is kind of baked in. while the psychological barrier gives a talking point to the president on the stump, whether

it changes people's minds at this point, i don't know. >> mitt romney put out a statement right away saying this is not what a real recovery looks like. he noted manufacturing job losses last month. is this taking direct aim at the midwest battleground states? >> it is. you notice the republican press releases and mitt romney's, they had to delete one line that had been a staple. the president promised unemployment below 8%, unemployment hasn't been below 8% since da da da da da. that line did get deleted. that's why the psychological barrier is important. when it comes to manufacturing, mitt romney has a new tv ad this morning, direct to camera, talking to ohio voters about we need to jump start manufacturing. they see that's their way back if they're going to make a come back in ohio and to a lesser extent wisconsin. >> you mention the debate the other night. the president's advisers say adjustments have to be made. how do they explain what happened?

>> they're struggling to explain what happened. i spoke with david plouffe a few minutes ago. he said we have to come up with a new tactic, we didn't expect mitt romney to do what he did, which was surprising. one of the things i heard, they need more people in the room essentially to get under the president's skin during debate prep, but there wasn't enough of that. others argue that happened but maybe the president didn't take it as seriously. i have been told this certainly was a wakeup call. >> mitt romney was on fox news last night saying he was completely wrong about the comments about 47% of americans. that's a shift. originally he stood by the sentiment he could have put it better. is this a change in strategy from the romney campaign? >> that 47%, that has left a bigger mark on mitt romney than anything that had happened in his political campaign to date. they had to find a way. they have been looking for a way to see if they could get rid of in the euphoria of debate

performance, this is an opportunity to completely disown it as best they can, and you know, it doesn't look like, you know, you're floundering or losing, timing it the best they can do. some folks wonder why didn't he do it two and a half weeks ago. >> another chance to debate the vice presidents next week, a couple weeks later hear from both candidates. chuck todd, thank you. david you will have more sunday on "meet the press." >> we will. special panel how this race changed from here. we go to natalie morales at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning. american airlines forced to cancel more flights this morning after it took 48 boeing 757s out of service to readdress the problem with loose seats. tom costello covers aviation for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. american said it had to cancel 50 flights yesterday, 44 today, and ordered 48 planes on the ground last night while it reexamines and fixing the

problem with loose seats. the airline says it is mechanics believed they discovered the real problem that caused some seats to come loose, something called the seat lock plunger mechanism. it is a pin and lock system that was stuck in the unlocked position on some planes. american blames wear and tear and spilled soda over the years for the problem. it was just yesterday american said it finished inspecting all 48 planes, returned them to service. last night, pulled the planes because of that pin and lock mechanism. they will be put back in service slowly. american hopes to have repairs completed by saturday. thousands of passengers will likely be inconvenienced again today. >> tom costello covering that for us. thanks, tom. to israel where a young american man opened fire in a southern resort town. nbc martin fletcher has more from tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are seeing this as an argument that went sadly too far.

a young american man in his 20s was in the hotel and had an argument with a hotel employee that went too far. a security guard came over to break up the argument. the american man grabbed the guard's gun, started shooting, and killed a man. he then ran away. imagine the panic in the hotel. the jewish holiday, the hotel full of tourists. the man ran away, firing the gun, hid in the hotel kitchen. police came, large contingent of police rushed to the hotel, there was a shootout of some kind and the police killed the young american man. we don't know the american's name, where he came from, what the argument was about. again, as i say, it didn't start as any kind of planned attack. it was an argument that ran out of control. they're saying nothing to do with terrorism, treating with as a electrical matter. contracting fungal meningitis, the rare and deadly strain of

the disease that's been linked to the contaminated steroid injections given for back pain. at least five people have died from the outbreak and another 35 people across six states have been sickened. united nations is strongly condemning syria's shelling of a turkish border village that killed two women and three children. syrian officials say they are not seeking to escalate the cross-border violence with turkey. this as the u.s. expresses support for turkey's retaliation following the incident. a players lockout has put the hockey season on ice through october 24th. the nhl has cancelled the first two weeks of the regular season. players are locked out over a dispute over how to divvy up some $3 billion in revenue. nasa's curiosity rover is now shovel ready. starting on saturday, the rover will start scooping sand from mars and shake it up for hours to get rid of any residual dirt from our planet. then once it gets the right scoop of sand shaken, not stirred, it will pour it into a mobile lab and start analyzing

safety for those kids. a brazen maneuver caught on tape, without even pausing. watch as this driver pulls up on to the curb and drives down the sidewalk to avoid waiting behind a school bus for handicapped children. >> comes through here every morning, goes around the school bus every morning. >> reporter: not just goes around. in the video you can clearly she sheena hardin doesn't just illegally pass on the right but uses a pedestrian walkway as a detour, and this was all captured by the bus driver. mom lisa kelly saw it every day, too, as she waited for the bus to pick up her daughter. >> what if it was her in a wheelchair. >> reporter: hardin does this all the time, but they needed proofrks so the driver got out his cell phone camera and started rolling, getting all the proof needed. the next day a cleveland police officer was ready and waiting. >> all right. she has been caught.

justice has been served. >> reporter: hardin appeared in court on tuesday and plead not guilty to the charges of not stopping for a school bus and reckless driving. hardin's mother trying to explain away her daughter's actions by arguing the bus takes too long and that what her daughter did wasn't all that dangerous. >> clearly the handicapped boy cannot run across the street. there's a factory across the street. >> reporter: look again. across the street is not a factory but a day care center, full of kids, who could have easily been in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> if we are h to evacuate the building, we would have to come through this door. this door here to come out of the building, and if she's coming up on the sidewalk, well, then, there's the danger right there. >> reporter: miss hardin is facing a $500 fine. she's due back in court later this month. we tried to talk to her a couple of times to ask her what she was thinking, what she was doing,

be cured or smoked and just smoked and then we call it bacon. >> and then you can call raw pork belly bacon, too, but what we think of as bacon is usually cured in a brine and smoked or just smoked. >> here we're looking at it slide. >> thick slices. here's some diced, what you might call minced. >> and pancetta is basically bacon, too. >> it's raw bacon that's cured with herbs really and spices. >> and the difference in quality is what? >> it's the same as it is with pork. sort of industrialially raised pork and more humanely and individually raised pigs, and these are not that we would ever plug anything, but these are some brands of sort of higher quality pork that make higher quality bacon. since bacon is getting more expensive. yeah, it's not a shortage actually, but it is going to get more expensive. meat in general is going to get more expensive. you might as well, i think, pay

the extra money and look at no nitrates and from better pork and it tastes better. >> the best way to cook it? >> you know, i was writing the piece for "the times" and i liked doing it in the oven and broiler and on top of the stove. if you have a really big piece, can you grill it. >> i've done that. >> so great, but we tend to do the stove top thing. >> this is one of my favorites. at some hoity-toity event with my wife, and there were guys in tuxedoes and white gloves with plates of this bacon and every man was around it. >> well, this morning, there has never been so much buzz about a story. >> this is party bacon. >> you cook bacon slowly, and as it's finishing you sprinkle it with brown sugar and then whatever else you want, but we're using rosemarie here, so you get this, you know, it's -- as if it weren't sticky and sweet enough it gets stickier and sweeter, and i would suggest

trying that. >> i suggest that, too. >> and chicken, you're cooking chicken wrapped in bacon as well. talk to us about this recipe. >> well, this is -- that's what it is. chicken wrapped in bacon. so you take a chicken breast, a couple of slices of bacon. twist it around. you wrap the chicken breast. >> you wrap the chicken breast in bacon and then slide it into the ban. when the bacon is done, the chicken is done. >> that's pretty easy. >> this is smart, too, as you're cooking the chicken. brussel sprouts, not my favorite. my wife loves brussel sprouts but bacon is a nice complement, right? >> you take bacon and brussel sprouts, toss them together in the oven together. >> a little olive oil to get it

86,000 more jobs in those months than previously estimated. #. >> more americans entered the work force, more people are getting jobs. now every month reminds us that we've still got too many of our friends and neighbors who are looking for work. there are too many middle class families still struggling to pay the bills. >> president obama and mitt romney are campaigning in the battleground state of virginia today. last night romney told fox news that his earlier statement seemingly writing off 47% of americans was completely wrong and that his life shows he cares about 100%. president obama accused romney meanwhile of dancing around his own positions saying if you want to be president you owe the american people the truth. american airlines canceled more flights today so it can fix the problem with seats that have come loose on at least three recent flights. american says all 48 of the boeing 757s being checked should

be back in service by tomorrow. the airline blames a combination of wear, poor design, and even soda spills for causing small pins in the seat locking mechanisms to malfunction. a young american man was shot and killed by israeli forces today after he allegedly opened fire inside a hotel killing a worker. it happened in the red sea resort city. officials say the suspect, who may have been a former hotel employee, apparently grabbed the gun from a female security officer. nasa's "curiosity" rover is shovel ready. starting saturday the rover will start scooping sand from mars and shake it for hours to get rid of residual dirt from our planet, then once it gets the right scoop it will be poured into a mobile lab to be analyzed. a new study suggests free birth control can dramatically lower rates of abortion and teen births. researchers tracked more than 9,000 women in st. louis. many of them were poor and uninsured. the report comes as millions of

women are about to gain access to free contraception under most workplace insurance plans as part of president obama's health care law. a surprise for a landscaper heading to work at a plant nursery in north carolina when he stumbled upon this, an eight-foot alligator sun bathing among the flowers. at first he thought it was a new, although creepy lawn statue, until it moved and the 200-pounder apparently took a whole hour for wildlife officials to wrangle. it is now safely released into a nearby river basin. and time for this baby's nine-week checkup. the newest and cutest resident at the san diego zoo weighed in at 6.6 pounds, just adorable, little panda cub, is developing well with fully functioning eyes, ears, and even yelps. it is now four minutes after the hour. speaking of yelps i'll throw it over to al as i hear my own little dog yelping here looking for me. >> we'll see you in just a second, the new meaning of devil dog. >> yes. >> let's see what we've got for

daughter jordan is here to talk to us about it. >> i know it's been a hard eight month. eight months ago you lost your father. how is your family doing and your sisters? >> thanks for asking. we're doing the best we can. it's hard, but we're very lucky to have each other and very lucky to have our friends and family. they have been very wonderful, and it's been uplifting to see how supportive everyone has been. >> yeah. this last book, your dad really focuses on the relationships and love and exploring, you know, and "the magic room" is this bridal salon. why do you think he wanted to write about it? >> i certainly think it's because he was interested in fashion. he wore hawaiian shirts every day. he was speaking to my mom about how he wanted to write a story about love that he wishes for his daughters and where he shut set that, and she thought there's something about a bridal gown that's really special and the relationship that you have with your family when you are picking out that, you know, that huge piece of clothing that you wear on such a big day.

it was really special. >> yeah. and i know that he did his research a lot by asking you and your sisters lots of questions about what it's like to be a girl growing up as a woman, right? >> yeah. he definitely used us as subjects quite often which is flattering in a way, you know, that he wanted to hear our opinions and, you know, how we thought it felt like to be a woman i guess. >> i guess so. >> it really is a book about finding love and exploring relationships. what do you in particular relate to in this book? >> well, the story, it's "the magic room" and the subtitle is "the love that we wish for our daughters" and even before my dad passed away it was so special to me to know how important it was for him, for us to find, you know, a very special person to spend the rest of our lives, and i think he always was thinking about our weddings, even before we were, and how important that decision, is and he wanted to be able to help, you know, facilitate it and make sure he was always

there for us, holding our hands and making sure we made the best decisions we could. >> yeah. a beautiful thing to think about. >> is there one particular story because chronicling the lives of many women as they step into "the magic room," the bridal salon, one that resonated with you the most? >> the story of danielle. she actually lost her mom when she was younger, and the beginning of the chapter is so beautiful in the way that my dad describes her relationship. sounds like they had so much fun and had such a special bond, and i sort of -- i understood that relationship so well because i had that kind of bond with my parents. i still do with my mom and my dad, but, you know, those just beautiful. so fun to read because i could totally relate. >> yeah, and meanwhile you mentioned your parents also had a very loving relationship as well. what did you learn from their marriage and the example they set? >> i think that i learned that it's very important to find someone that you love, but also very important to find a partner because my parents were totally -- they raised us completely 50/50. they respected each other.

they had -- they had a great respect for each other that i think helps us live in a more loving, stable household. >> and i understand your dad would also leave notes around the house for you and your sisters as well. >> yes. >> something we can all take away from. >> yeah. it was cute. it was so sweet. always like one-liners, good luck on your exam, something so that we knew he would think of us. >> and your father's legacy, what do you think that is? >> i think it's just to be a good person and just to be kind and to be someone that people want to be around and to be someone that people -- people love and people -- and someone that makes other people feel loved, too, is really important. i think that he did a really good job of making people feel loved >> i know he's very proud of you this moment right now. >> thank you so much. >> so much to meet you. the best. the book is called "the magic room." and we'll be right back, but first these messages. "today" contributing correspondent jenna bush hager has the story of one young woman who successfully mobilized all three before she was old enough to vote. good morning to you, jenna. >> good morning. it's incredible. kelly lamond's story is rooted in the most damaging natural disaster that has ever hit the united states, and it proves

that anybody has the power to make a difference. in 200510-year-old talia lamond watched from her home in iowa as hurricane katrina devastated the gold coast. >> first i want to use these. >> reporter: even at such a young age she felt compelled to help people affected by the storm devising plans to trick-or-treat for donations, rather than candy. >> why did you decide to do this? >> well, i don't know who wouldn't want to. i mean, who wouldn't want to help? >> reporter: her plan gained momentum. only after some initial opposition from an unlikely foe, her young eer brother xander. >> i'm opposed to it? >> why are you opposed to it? >> because i want my candy back. >> yet xander's opposition actually brought a swell of support to the cause, and kids around the country joined talia

to tally more than $10 million. though at 10 years old she took on the title of ceo, chief executive optimist, and named her organization random kid, and out of that simple act of kindness a philanthropist was born. >> don't be afraid to like embrace that. >> reporter: now 17 and a senior in high school, she continues to do good and shares her message with other young people. >> i figured that if kids could raise $10 million for hurricane relief, that we could do anything. >> reporter: and she's even written a new book titled "a random book about the power of anyone." do you still think of yourself as a random kid? >> i definitely think of myself as a random kid. i think all along people would ask, like, why are you so special? and, you know, i wasn't. i was a random kid who saw a problem and wanted to do something. >> according to random kids, the non-profit has connected 12 million kids in 20 different

countries to date, mobilizing them to work on charitable projects of their own, ranging from disaster relief and clean water projects, to building schools as far away as cambodia. one of the things that i loved about your book is they are fuld of what i have coined as taliaisms or lessons that you've learned at the ripe age of 17 years old. do you mind just listing a couple of those for us? >> the way i arranged the contents on the table was all like counterintuitive messages, like, for example, big efforts can't measure up because they can't, you know, small efforts that matter the most or, for example, too many cooks is the right number, and you realize that everyone leads with their passion, with their greatest skill, that that's really important. >> reporter: scattered throughout the pages of talia's book are images of her biggest inspiration, her little brother xander who opposed her plans back in 2005 but has since come around. >> i really look up to him, he's a role model for me, and i think that the reason that is he has

autism spectrum disorder and with that comes this incredible -- he's so genuine in who he is, and i strive to be at least as close to as genuine as he is. >> reporter: and before heading to -- talia has another project in the works, she is calling the big return. random kid partnered with a non-profit youth venture to fund and train some st. louis students in project development. they gave the kids 6,800 and after four months kids turned that in 72,000. >> the return on investment pure financially was over a 900% return so now i'm looking to take that to more the next five years. you can give $1 to haiti or give it to a kid and that turns into $10 for haiti. >> reporter: she even speculates with b a possible run for office. nicholas kristof has endorsed you for president, albeit in 2044.

do is start with pecan crusted salmon. with no respect to your dogs, it's so easy they could do it. no disrespect to your cats or dogs, i know they are smart. take some pecans, melted butter, dry dill, garlic, salt. >> that's it? >> that's it. >> this is easy. >> grind it up. >> okay. yum, yum. then it becomes like this. >> still kind of crunchy. >> it's crunchy and full of flavor. the first thing we do with the salmon is season it because we're all about big, strong flavors. that's what the whole reason for being is to me. >> what salmon do you like? do you like the wild salmon? >> i love wild salmon. this is a piece right there. >> beautiful. you have to have it twice a week for great heart health. >> i think more. >> i'm with you. >> then you do like that. >> i like it.
